We were stunned and saddened to hear the news that poster artist Tony Stella died this week, as announced by his longtime collaborator Midnight Marauder. Stella was known for his expressive, richly composed, always hand-painted illustrations, evocative of classic U.S. and Italian cinema advertising from the 1970s and ’80s. A new Stella poster was always a pleasure to see, and he was one of the few contemporary poster artists whose style was instantly recognizable at a glance. Below is a recent work by Stella for Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera (2023). Stella was superhumanly prolific and we’ll be sharing more of his work in the coming weeks.
